MotionX-GPS

One of the first and most popular GPS apps on the Appstore. Support for every possible activity with downloadable cached maps for off the grid trekking. Designed for visibility in light and dark environments for any situation.

Created with a team of outdoor enthusiasts MotionX-GPS had to cram in every possible feature of any full fledged standalone unit, and support every possible use case. This presented a great challenge for what was to become my first big UI/UX project. At a time when skeuomorphism reigned supreme for app design, fitting all our functionality in one app had me already breaking down the walls of the style.

A simpler concept I worked on at a turning point in app design when the retina screen was first introduced. Taking advantage of the larger real estate and enhanced clarity of new screen technology.

We had a lot of fun balancing visuals, usability and visibility in GPS. It was always a challenge to display as much on screen while still allowing the user to see all relevant info at a quick glance while on a bike, running, hiking or as we found out from many users, flying.

Designing GPS was very much a passion project. Any downtime was spent iterating new designs, colors and functionality. Most of these screens here were never used, but from them we learned a lot about what we could accomplish, and more importantly, what we could read in direct sunlight out on the top of a mountain.
